Side By Side: Fastest in Akina!

The precursor to the Battle Gear series has the infamous Akina stage as well and it's a joy to time attack! It's the last of the Side By Side 2 tracks, so just press left after starting time attack mode (once if you haven't unlocked any extra tracks, more if you have) and there it is. It looks like this:

KAI, my man!

Yeah, lack of a map can make it take a bit longer to get comfortable with the track, since it's fairly long and complex. I had played Akina Downhill so much in Battle Gear 2 and 3 (the latter has a good map) that I was already familiar with the course. I've actually been meaning to make a map of the course using Google Maps...

That would be awesome, please do it if you can.

Just watched your replay. Wow, nice techniques. The game looks easier using the aerial view.

It's plain, but maybe it'll help a bit? I actually want to make something a bit more complex, where you can choose if you want to see numbers for the corners (so you can easily communicate what corner you're talking about), see the location of checkpoints (which vary between different games) and things like that. Just need to figure out what's the best way to do it.

Worth noting that since this map's put together from Google Maps, it doesn't match what's in the games 100%, but it should be close enough to get the job done.

I'm sure you can do it! My run has some bad mistakes on it, most noticeably how I hit the wall at 1:56 of my video.

If you really want to blow your mind, watch this. It's a TAS, but still.

Damn. Watching that really makes me want to play the game now...

Well, I'm not in your ballpark, but I love this course to death, so I'll join the fray:

Djhaigh & 3:11:69 & FD3S & AT

Also, I -really- love tackling the track in the iconic AE86 Trueno, so I'd like to spark a separate board specifically for that car. Currently I'm barely getting it done in time, but:

Djhaigh & 3:18.73 & AE86 Trueno & AT

The 86 is awesome because there's plenty of room between taking a corner cleanly and taking it optimally. You have to maintain momentum in the void of acceleration.

Is someone else willing to knock me off that humble hill?

That is an excellent idea and one that has been implemented. Went and gave it a go:

Ghegs & 3:14.19 & AE86 Trueno & AT

I think we can push it to 3:10 at the very least.

Nice, keep going!

I've been having fun doing the hachiroku run myself:

Ghegs & 3:05.76 & AE86 Trueno & AT

One corner went kind of badly, so it could still be improved. I'm thinking 3:04 or maybe even 3:03 is my goal.

Good to have you back, KAI!

That video's from the arcade original, neat. But yeah, the car can go to pretty extreme angles during drifts, I can't imagine playing it on bumper cam.

Managed to get

Ghegs & 3:04.89 & AE86 Trueno & AT

but I feel I can squeeze a bit more out of it...

The first sector is not as fast I could've done it, and I mess up in the hairpins a bit, so I could still tighten it up a bit, maybe to 3:02...but I have to challenge KAI in the BG2 time attack thread now.

It'll be interesting to see how this practice will improve my FD3S time on the course.

Very tiny improvement:

I'm somewhat addicted to this game/course/car -combination. It's just utterly fun.

I am -finally- getting the hang of the early power-on that this drift model allows. Much higher exit speeds now, and I'm hoping that will start bringing my times down sharply.

Ghegs & 3:03.39 & AE86 Trueno & AT

Scratch that earlier "somewhat". I played about an hour today and kept making small improvements (like 0.05) which lead to this. I've been figuring out new approaches to some corners, starting inertia drifts in some places rather than braking or letting go of the accelerator. A bit easier to mess up, but clearly it seems to be working, and I can squeeze that even lower. I don't think 3:02 is an impossibility.

Sorry KAI, I'll get to tackling your BG2 times soon! But I can't resist the sweet siren call of SBS Akina.
