Ridge Racer 1 & 2 (PSP)

Postby KAI » Fri Nov 02, 2012 1:24 am

Ridge Racer & Ridge Racer 2 for the PSP are a sort of reboot for the series, and my personal favorites. The sequel adds tracks and messes with the super class of cars, but is otherwise completely identical to the original, so we'll have a unified time table.

Use time attack mode, and Class 6 vehicles or lower. We'll start with the Rave Racer tracks, but if you have a particular favorite course, just say so and I'll add it in.

Please make your entries in the following format:

Name & Time & Car & Drift Type & Transmission & Version

Midtown Expressway
null1024 & 2:53:999 & Solvalou Fatalita Type-S & Standard & AT & Ridge Racer 2

Took a while to get this. Could be much improved too, but hey. Playing on Class 6 is brilliant fun, the cars just slide and move like butter, it's so neat. Butter that moves at 300+ kph.

Trying to take some of the turns tighter is a bit hard, especially if you accidentally break into a drift. Drifts are really weird in this game, they seem to lock onto the course itself and auto-guide for the most part, which means that changing position relative to the inside of a corner is pretty much impossible while in drift.

First pass at these courses. Don't remember them from the World Tour, but they're damn fine tracks. I especially like Downtown Rave City.

Downtown Rave City
Moniker & 3:47.910 & Groba Fatalia Type-R & STD & AT & RR2

Greenpeak Highlands
Moniker & 3:15:358 & Groba Fatalia Type-R & STD & AT & RR2

Silvercreek Dam
Moniker & 3:32.923 & Grobda Fatalia Type-R & STD & AT & RR2

Edit: Woops, seems I mussed some stuff up with the track listing. I wondered how you beat me by almost a minute on Mid Exp. Will rectify shortly...

PS - I think the "locking on" is equivalent to the "grip type" driving featured in R4. If you hit the corner right, it sort of pulls you along. I think all sharp turns have it, at least for STD & MLD types.

Midtown Expressway
Moniker & 2:58.791 & Groba Fatalia Type-R & STD & AT & RR2

Key to this one seems to be controlling the drift both before the multi-jump section, and the long slow turn. I haven't quite figured out how to handle the latter, as it seems necessary to drift for maybe 1/6th of the turn - just don't know exactly where to hit it optimally. I'll have to do some more runs tomorrow.

@null - Is there a particular reason you're using the slower class 6 STD car?

Haven't unlocked the others, that's all.
And that multi-jump bit is a pain, I'm not entirely sure how to avoid hitting the walls there. I'll avoid them some laps and then screw up on others, it's such a pain.

Midtown Expressway
Moniker & 2:52.353 & Grobda Fatalia Type R & AT & RR2

I think I've mostly sussed out the multijump section. There's a quick right and then a full right turn right before you hit it. I start drifting right as I hit the quick right, so that when I straighten out, I'm aiming directly downhill, and don't skid or knock the walls on the way down.

I think my fastest first lap was 59 secs, but here I only managed 1:01, so there's definitely room for improvement. Judging from my ghosts, I really need to clean up my cornering, too.

Midtown Expressway
Moniker & 2:43.256 & Galaxian EO & MLD & AT & RR2

Pretty good improvement, although some of that is no doubt due to unlocking the best class-6 cars. I think I prefer MLD drift cars now. There are a lot of turns that you can take normally where you'd have to drift with a STD or DYN.

Also getting the hang of ultimate charging, and charging in general. You can take a corner and differ from the normal racing line very very slightly, and it will count as drift without losing speed (or making any sound). Pulling it off at high speed on a decent sized turn can net you about 75% of an NO2 tank. Although I'm sure world-class players can refill it completely.

Had been waiting on null to put some times down before working on the other courses, but I guess I may as well start on 'em.

I still haven't unlocked any of the faster Class 6 cars (just got started on the Pro Tour), but I couldn't resist jumping in here already.

Is there no "Fastest times" list anywhere in the game or am I just blind to it?

Greenpeak Highlands is such a tricky track. There's that part before the bridge that's so easy to mess up and hit the walls.

Aww yea boiii. Time to bust out the PSP once more.

Is there no "Fastest times" list anywhere in the game or am I just blind to it?

I've looked for it too, seems to be oddly missing. The time attack menu will tell you your fastest time, but you have to select each track individually to see. Bit of a PITA.

Playing with PPSSPP, I hope there's no problem, I'm using the last build (ppsspp-v0.7.6-1178-g94cce21) and the game runs at 60fps all the time.

null1024 & 2:41.285 & Druaga Raggio Type Z & DYN & AT & RR2

Not too great, but hey. DYN drifting is interesting, but it is really hard to drift just when you want. The lowered speed loss during a drift seems to be worth it though.

After my PSP's memory stick got formatted and my last backup was from ages ago, I just downloaded an all-clear save.

Had a near constant 3 nitrous tanks the whole race, this track was made for DYN cars, hahaha.

I go faster with the Raggio [seriously, I almost never hit 300kph in the EO], but I keep screwing up with it.

Ooh, niiice.

On a somewhat unrelated note, I really wish I had some way to setup race recording -- RR2's replay feature sucks because you can't force the in-car camera... blah.

I was going to put up a Midtown Expressway time, but Heyo's time is so much better that I'll just hold off until I can get closer.

aaaaa, I hate you all [but I still love you all  ]

I'm getting there, but it will take a long time, I need to figure out how to get a bit more boost so I can have the three 50-second laps needed... I had an amazing second lap that hit 50.618 seconds, but my other laps were 53s...

Midtown Expressway
null1024 & 2:37:083 & Druaga Raggio Type-Z & DYN & AT & RR2

Also, seeing those brilliant Type-R times is bothering me, once you get the Type-Z Raggio, everything is lost.

whoops, forgot to put which track this was, haha

I've been trying to improve my Greenpeak Highlands time... but there's that one corner that the game regards in the silliest of ways -- half the time the game will auto-drive through it [it is the weirdest feeling, although this is the game that I can drift the opposite direction around a corner and it will often work]... and then the other half, I'll just slam into the wall. Blah.

I might be able to get close within the week for Greenpeak Highlands though.

I really want to use the Raggio, but eff. It really is so much faster on average, but it is too uncontrollable on this course... I'll clean outpace my EO ghost and then slam into a wall.

Thinking of getting an emu and giving a try. One question before that: What's the easiest way to drift: MT-down one gear or braking?
I mean, It's kind of cheesy to ask for tips in a competition thread, but I have NEVER played RR asides from RR64.
