Daytona 3 Championship USA

At an upcoming IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions) trade show Sega will be unveiling "a showstopper video game" and rumours say it could be something called Daytona Reloaded. Whether the rumours are true, and what Daytona Reloaded actually is if it is true, still remains to be seen.

EDIT: Changed thread title to what the game's name has been confirmed to be.

holy crap! This is awesome news. This will bring back 'arcades'. I see queues, people wanting to play this. The question is if this will be made by AM2. Hell, even if it was a compilation of daytona 1,2 and Scud Race tracks thrown in, it would be great. Thanks for letting us know.

Considering currently Japanese video game industry is still high on hype with VR, I suppose this one may incorporate some kind of VR gimmick.

The rumours were true!

Official press release at http://www.segaarcade.com/daytona-the-true-legend-is-back

Important points:

  • Daytona 3 Championship USA
  • Features three brand new tracks
  • In addition, the original three classic courses have been remastered for the modern era
  • Importantly we have based it on the original game engine
  • New cars and new game modes bring more for players old and new to experience

Hopefully we can get some video footage of the game from IAAPA in a few weeks.

Also worth noting that the Twitter post includes #ArcadeOnly. Here's still hoping for an eventual home port...

Sounds pretty cool. There's not a single arcade left in my country, only the random barcade, and none of those will be able to afford a brand new machine liket his.

Wonder if/when it hits consoles? Any of you think it will?

Do do-do do do do do do-doo dooo!

Could this be the beginning of a return to form for SEGA? I know we have not played it yet, but for the first time in a while the intention is there to make a genuine SEGA game (i.e. not just churning out sub-par Sonic games and publishing purchased franchises like Aliens, Total War and Football Manager).

Fingers crossed for Daytona 2 tracks, and then a PS4 release which includes the tracks from Scud Race as a bonus. Blue sky thinking!

"Importantly we have based it on the original game engine"
I guess we'll get to experience the exact meaning of 'based', but the intentions are indeed good.

It's great news I suppose but I can't really get excited about something I'll never play. I don't hold out a lot of hope for a home version.

They're saying the real Daytona International Speedway will be in it.

Looks nice, I'm hoping somebody will post a full gameplay video. Unless Sega has forbidden it in the trade show?

Arcade Heroes posted a hands-on video. We see 3 of 6 selectable tracks. From the gameplay we see the oval circuit but we also get to see what looks like a mirrored version of dinosaur canyon

Ooh, nice.

Interesting difference between AT and MT cars. Instead of MT just having a higher top speed but being otherwise the same stats-wise like in the first game, here it also has better acceleration and slightly better braking, but worse handling.

Yeah, that definitely looks like a mirrored Dinosaur Canyon.

A Sega employee playing through Three-Seven Speedway. Sadly he uses AT so we don't know if the MT drifting mechanics from the original return.

Not that he'd be able to use them anyway, since this prototype only has up/down gear switch.

Is there really much difference between Three-Seven Speedway and Daytona International Speedway?

With the advanced course seemingly just a mirrored Dinosaur Canyon, I am losing hope in there being any new or Daytona 2 tracks. The remaining three could just be regular Dinosaur Canyon and two variants of Seaside Street Galaxy...

This video seems to show that the track maps for Three Seven Speedway and Daytona International Speedway are identical, and that Dinosaur Canyon is the second advanced track. It is looking increasingly likely there will not be any truly new tracks in this version. Seems to correlate with them backing down from calling it Daytona 3.

Those icons on the left, the strange colored lines to the cars and the scrolling stuff on the bottom of the screen. That was their creative new feature? Looks like I'm watching CNN. I'm less and less not understanding why this is being made.

Oh yeah, of course. Make money with the least amount of effort possible. duh.
I predict a new Daytone reboot/remake thingie every 10 years now.

This dude gave his impressions on Daytona 3. Looks like Daytona 3 has a HUGE deadzone...

That explains it! In earlier videos I thought I picked up just by watching that the game has some lag to the controls. So having big deadzone certainly explains that.

PRC Reader Review wrote:The first evident aspect the fans noticed, one which will disappoint every single one of them, is the game’s gear shift choice. Instead of the traditional 4-gear H-pattern configuration previous Daytona USA games once used, as well as the SCUD and Sega Rally machines, the game opts for a more simplistic low/high configuration. That means no more drift tricks using the manual transmission that advanced Daytona USA veterans are used to. Second, the fans figured out that the “new” tracks are just simply re-skinned and mirrored versions of the original layouts. Furthermore, the new tracks also use recycled soundtracks – evident in the Lakeside (mirrored Advanced) course, where it uses the song from Daytona USA 2001’s Rin Rin Rink course. Talk about effort, or lack thereof.

Nobody can be blamed for hoping.

Isn't the game still in development? All the videos I've seen of it have the later courses unavailable.

At this point it's safe to say the game itself was developed using a generic COTS engine, as in Unity.
