Sega Rally Championship

The perennial Sega Rally. The game received ports for various systems, GBA and N-Gage included, but I believe the arcade original, Saturn, PC and PS2 ports are compatible with each other as far as times are concerned so let's stick to those. If you know different, let me know.

Back around 08 or 09 there was a pretty decent machine within a bike ride or decent walk from my parents place. They cycled it out for a less than perfect Daytona USA before I moved out, but for a while there I was playing fairly regularly. Unfortunately I don't think I've seen a cab since then...I never liked it quite as much as Daytona but it's definitely quite a bit of fun.

I only have the Saturn port and don't currently have my US Saturn stuff with me, I may have to look into the ps2 version if it isn't outrageously priced, I don't really have room to bring up another console at the moment. How is the port? It supports Logitech wheels doesn't it?

According to the game's manual it supports Logitech GT Force and Logitech GT Force Pro. As I understand the port is pretty much perfect. It also supports 480p and is extremely import friendly. The PS2 version was only released in a First Print Limited Edition with Sega Rally 2006 so if you go checking eBay for it, make sure it's included in the deal. I see there's a new copy of the game with both games available for $39, so that's not too bad.

10min drive from my house. Located in a place called Legelandet aka Play Land. It's an indoor kids playground with slides, bouncy castles etc. but they also have an arcade section. They have 2x double sega rally championship sitdowns.

What are your feelings about using the Model 2 emulator for PC?

Does it run the game well enough so that the times made with it are comparable to the other versions? If so, go for it.

I'll get a better time this weekend, I've been getting my rally on with Dirt 3 for a few days.

Man, this game is hard. I only managed to shave a little bit of time off:

It runs very well. The AI is a bit wonky but the times are comparable to the real arcade version.

Do you cross the finish line in stage 3 with 0 seconds left with that time? I did a 3:32:XX on several arcade machines and roll across the line with 0 seconds left.

It was like 1 or 2 seconds left on the clock.

That sounds about right. I had a chance to play the arcade version yesterday, and reached 0 seconds just before the finish line and rolled across at 3:32:45.

I think the Model 2 emulator is good enough too.

I've cleared it in 3:33:03 before, and I think the arcade on Easy still gives the same amount of seconds for Stage 3...

LOL. Found PC version from my parents in CD and tried it.. Worked like a charm on windows7 PC.

Times are not comparable to arcade cabinet. I think PC version and PS2 version are the same but arcade cabinet is much harder.

First run on PC with keyboard and i drove faster than on cabinet.

Hmm, interesting. Can you put your finger on what exactly is different between the versions? I put your time in the same table for now, but I'll make a separate table for PC/PS2 and Arcade if we can get to the bottom of this.

You're in a good situation having the Arcade version to play as well. Does your friend run an arcade or does he just have the cab sitting in his garage? Sega Rally 2 works nicely on Win7 64-bit as well, btw.

I think that game is much more slower in cabinet. cars dont accelerate as fast..
also best times to beat are in cabinet 3:30:00 and in PC version 3:25:25. It tells me that you can drive almost 5 seconds faster in PC version.

My friend has this old "farm" and theres a building that he has repaired and it's now as a bar.. theres this cabinet aswell :)

With PC version i now got 3.27.04. And it was my second run after that 3.28.00 i put here earlier.

EDIT: Put a little bit better at third time 3.25.97

I don't know where I'm going wrong on this game.. If I even manage to get to Lakeside, there's no way I can complete it. I bump into every corner. I'm left with about 5 seconds to go during Mountain :( Makes me sad watching people play.

Can we get this thread going again? :D I'm still not great at this game, but I'm happy about something today. I know this can be bettered by a lot if Marubaku can get 3'15. My hairpin turn on Mountain was really bad. Need to use the practice track probably.

Nice, added your time to the table, but please use the provided format in the future as it makes it easier for me to edit the times in. It has been a while since I've done any Sega Rally-ing, I'll try to get some runs in soon.

I decided to revisit the first 2 Sega Rally games recently (arcade emulators only) and push my times.

For now, my best is 3'18"10. I quit there trying to get back a 3'18"18 I lost with a corrupted save file.
(Ghegs, please add Lee 3:18:10 Delta [MT] Model 2) (and a black NeGcon).

Oh wow, really nice time. You're using a neGcon to play Sega Rally? That's awesome!

Thanks. Yeah, I wouldn't recommend it for SR. It's ok for a sesh on some older games, but when you want to hold a precise line, it's not reliable. And these controllers (black and white) hurt my hands after a while.

Do you still use yours or did you move on to something else? :)

Yeah, I still use mine, can't play Side By Side without it. I'm not very familiar with the Model 2 emulator so I don't know what kind of controller configuration options it has, but the neGcon can be perfectly precise.

Started to get under 3'18 at last. I've had some issues with scores not saving through the Model 2 emulator, but I've pinned it down to using it through LaunchBox. It's not something that's happened every time a score was set, just random times, much to my annoyance like the first time I got under 3'18 and the something similar with 3'19, but it's made me push to get them back. Always use the original launcher for this if you're thinking of playing it.

Ghegs, please add Lee 3:17:78 Delta [MT] Model 2. Thanks.

Not sure if it's legit, but I used the handling change cheat (Gear 1>2>3>4 during the car select screen) and I broke my old time in the first try.

Hadn't heard of that cheat, had to Google it. According to GameFAQs it starts up Turbo Mode, which certainly sounds non-legit. Can you describe what it actually does?

The car's top speed is the same, but they reach it faster using that cheat, also the grip is different (more drifty).

Got this without using that cheat:

I actually believe it's better to use the usual car. I think the records are also done with the normal car as well. The reason is, you can't get on the attract board when using the secret car.

Aww, you didn't update my time :) I broke it shortly after the last one anyway, but haven't tried to do anything since, so there it stands.. Image
